EMDR

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) is a Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy used to help support people who have experienced traumatic events through healing emotional distress that often stems from such experiences. Using Bilateral Stimulation (Typically in the form of Rapid Eye Movements, Tapping or Auditory Tones), the brain is able to process memories of difficult experiences that are still present.

“This treatment approach, which targets past experience, current triggers, and future potential challenges, results in the alleviation of presenting symptoms, a decrease or elimination of distress from the disturbing memory, improved view of the self, relief from bodily disturbance, and resolution of present and future anticipated triggers” (EMDRIA, 2017)”

What does a session look like?

During an EMDR session we will:

  • Identify a specific memory that has been disturbing you (either from the past or present)

  • Identify patterned and dysfunctional beliefs about yourself

  • Desensitize and process the disturbing memory through Bilateral Stimulation

  • Install a new understanding of the memory to support you to think differently about the experience and give you the power over your story

EMDR sessions can be conducted in-person or online depending on your preference.
